Bloodborne Pathogens & Infectious Disease

This program is designed as an annual refresher training module to assist fire and emergency medical personnel in how to handle bio-hazardous pathogens. It is intended to help you comply with the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, Section 1910:30 for annual review of Bloodborne Pathogen/Infectious Diseases, that emergency service personnel may encounter.

This session does NOT cover the full array of subject matter which typically includes: identifying how significant is the exposure, what actions to take, confidentiality, counseling, testing, treatment and prophylaxis, family issues, employment issues, pharmacology, decontamination, laundry and waste management. For the full course, contact your officer or your VFIS representative.
The program consists of 6 Steps:
1. Before beginning the program, make sure your organizaiton's Infectious Disease Officer or designee is available for consult during your completion of this course.
2. Review the content of the accompanying powerpoint presentation.
3. With your infectious disease Designated Officer, review these items:
- Any exposure you may have on the standard or topics within the standard.
- Any new information, equipment or procedures for your organization.
- Organizational exposure data for the last 12 months (including bloodborne and airborne exposures and methods to reduce exposures).
- Disease statistics for your state for the past 12 months.
- Disease outbreaks and health alerts in your area.
- New /revised applicable OSHA standards
- Current procedures to be taken for a significant bloodborne pathogen exposure.
- Review any applicabel item identifeid by the organization.
4. Obtain a copy of your organization's related standard operating guideline(s) and review it, asking questions of your supervisor/trainer as necessary.
5. Complete the Assessment
6. After successful completion of the assessment, print off the program completion form for sign-off and insertion in your personnel/training file.

Note you may have to save the powerpoint before opening, depending upon your computer operating system.
